Israel is a country on the very edge of the desert. 60% of the country's land is desert, but from the early 20th century, before anyone alse, one the Zionist movement's most important goals was to "make the desert bloom". Planting trees, growing agriculture in the desert, moving water to dry areas, building desert settlements, all of these were used to a great extent.
Today, Israel's Negev desert is retreating, with more and more of its land becoming fields and forests. Israel is the only country in the Middle East with a retreating desert, and is one of the world's leading nations when it comes to anti-desertification. Israel is helping many other nations to implement the Israeli technology and experience in their own deserts.
The first name of Kibbutz Giv'at Brenner was "Sha'ar HaNegev" - "The Gate of the Negev". This name was given to it mostly because of the fact that when it was founded almost anything south of it was considered a desert. The change is clearly visible today.Israel is a country on the very edge of the desert. 60% of the country's land is desert, but from the early 20th century, before anyone alse, one the Zionist movement's most important goals was to "make the desert bloom". Kibbutz Revivim is one of the leading desert settlements in Israel. It is a green jewel in the middle of the desert, with trees, grass, fields, plantations, and even a small lake. This settlement is a proof that with the right kind of development, the desert can become productive and hospitable.Israel is a country on the very edge of the desert. 60% of the country's land is desert, but from the early 20th century, before anyone alse, one the Zionist movement's most important goals was to "make the desert bloom". David Ben Gurion said that Israel's future lies in the desert, and this area is indeed Israel's future. In the following decades, this area, the sand dunes of Nizanna, will be developed in a similar way to the Northern Negev, and be transformed into fields of agriculture.Israel is a country on the very edge of the desert. 60% of the country's land is desert, but from the early 20th century, before anyone alse, one the Zionist movement's most important goals was to "make the desert bloom". The Northern Negev is a large piece of land, on Israeli scale, that was once nothing more than a desert. The water brought from northern Israel, as well as advanced agriculture, made this place one of the most productive areas in Israel. The Yatir forest is located south of Hebron, on the Israel-West Bank border. It is one of the biggest forests in Israel. The special thing about it is that because of the fact that it's right on the border, you can see some kind of a "before-after" picture of this land - the green forest in the Israeli side, and the much more barren land in the Palestinian side. The Israeli side has been the same before it has been forested. |
